danny vasquez talks working with stan lee + life on the set of Netflix's 'YOU'
Did you intend on becoming an actor? How did you get started?
Funny enough I didn’t intend on becoming an actor. I did go to a performing arts school, the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA) but I played baseball in high school and a bit in college, and I had EVERY intention of trying to go pro. Sadly that didn't work out after an injury to my shoulder my freshman year. Then a very close friend of mine asked me what else I could see myself doing for a living, I told 'em that I loved acting in a play I did in high school. So I got headshots and sent them out to agents, got a couple responses, signed with an agent, and the rest is history I suppose.
What are you doing when you're not working?
Well, I'd like to think there's always work to be done- writing, scene work to work on the craft. But in my downtime I love yoga, hiking, working out and of course spending time with my family. As of now I do spend a lot of time with my 6 month old puppy Winston! The best lil’ pup a guy could ask for.
You play David Fincher in the Netflix hit 'YOU'- what was your experience like working alongside such a phenomenal cast? Who did you spend the most time with on set?
I gotta say, working on "YOU" was an absolutely INCREDIBLE experience. Everyone was lights out. Yes the cast was phenomenal, but the crew was just unbelievably good. It's rare to work on a project so fun that you love and look forward to EVERYTIME. To be honest, I hung out with Penn quite a bit, as well as Carmela, and Victoria (all awesome people and actors), but I also hung out quite a bit with the crew and the writers. They are all such accredited professionals and genuinely good people. Shout out to Justin, Kelli, DeMane and Crotty!
Your scene in Ant-Man is still a classic. 918,000 views on YouTube and counting- including a cameo with Stan Lee. What was it like being a part of the Marvel Universe?
Ant-Man was unreal. When I found out I was gonna do a scene with Stan Lee, I lost it! I'm a total Marvel fan and when Stan Lee showed up on set, literally everyone stopped what they were doing and reset. The shots being filmed at the time were put on hold because he only had about an hour to get his coverage. I had never seen anything like that before, and deservedly so. He was such a genius. It was like if GOD himself had shown up. (You can watch the scene below.)
If you could pick one scene out of your past work and relive it again, which would it be?
I've been fortunate to work with so many different talented actors, directors, producers, and showrunners. I've had incredible scenes with the likes of Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear, Todd Smith (LL Cool J), Michael Pena, Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, Jimmi Simpson, and I would relive working with any of them in a HEARTBEAT, along with the countless other amazing actors I've worked with. But I think it's obvious. The world lost an incredible talent in Stan Lee. I would love to relive that day, working with him. If anything I wish I had more time to pick his brain a bit.
What are you working on now?
I've got a few things lined up which can't be announced quite yet. I've also started writing now as I looooove storytelling. I guess in the end, you’ll just have to stay tuned!
