GUEST POST by fashion designer ‘Claire Ashley’: 5 Key Factors to Watch Out For When Buying a Suit!

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwil1OLK-YHTAhUB32MKHRHIDk4QjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.groupon.com%2Fdeals%2Fgg-braveman-mens-classic-fit-suits&psig=AFQjCNH1v7zU_Up2Dv46cu9QbbWcP9AhmQ&ust=1491091007110012

Going for a job interview or having a dinner tonight? All men have wanted to suit up like Harvey Specter from Suits. Some men like to have unique, versatile suits each suited for a particular event. Some would want to buy that one suit which gets them through all occasions but wait a second! Whether versatile suiting or limited selection, we all know men to be miserable at shopping.

Buying a suit can be extremely tiring, especially for a man who has not done shopping for formal wear before. We have put down 5 key factors that you should watch out before buying a suit:
Know your needs: Before spending your hard earned dollars on buying a suit, know what you are buying a suit for. Keep in mind as to “why am I buying a suit?” Do you have to attend a formal occasion, attend a banquet, go for an interview, or have a date with a loved one? A smart buyer will make a purchase that fits in most situations. It is okay to be excited for an event and shopping for something specific, but know that it’s not worth it every single time. If you had an occasion-specific suit last time, now is the time to buy a suit that mixes and matches for a number of events.

Find the best fit: A comfortable fit should be the most important factor when buying a suit. You would never like to buy a suit that you cannot fit yourself into. Imagine the buttons bursting open at your belly or sleeves folded inside to fit your arm length. Most stores offer alteration facilities, but know that you would not be able to enjoy the same great look after large alterations. Your coat should not be oversized or so undersized that it makes you look like an idiotic senior or a stupid schoolboy.

Style: Go for timeless styles. Consider your body shape and find a best fit. E.g. Slimmer men should go for broad shoulder styles and one vent. Broad men should not opt for more than 2 vents. Flat pockets should be preferred over slanted ones.

Colors and Fabric: Go for versatile colors that can cover most of the occasions for you. Black should be avoided as it is mostly for funerals. Instead opt for colors like navy blue or classic charcoal. These colors can be worn on a number of events, including funerals. For fabrics, you should stick to the usual ones like wool.

Match the accessories: You would obviously wear the suit with a few accessories such as a shirt, tie, cufflinks and belts. You do not need to be very specific here as well. Do not ignore the accessories as you can never complete your look without them. Dark colored shirts look better with light colored suits. Ties should be simple and with solid patterns. The accessories also allow you to be flexible e.g. you can get more than one shirt and tie with your suit and dress up differentially for different days.

Boyfriend Chic:

Femininity is being redefined in 2017, so expect to see a lot of people overthrowing their tight clothing for the comfy “boyfriend chic” look. This Spring we are going to see a heavy focus on baggy clothing and designers like Antony Murato and are going to be big. The 80s are going to be big this Spring, so pairing big airy tops and bicycle shorts are going to be the way to go! So if you love to steal your boyfriend’s T-Shirts and sweatshirts now you have a great reason to!

Sporty Spice:

Athletic inspired outfits are going to grow in popularity this Spring, after hitting the runway with an “easy elegance” vibe, expect to be swapping your jeans for joggers and gym pants this Spring. Forget about suffering in the name of style! Now wearing sporty clothing is less about getting fit and more about getting in line with the seasons latest comfy trend.

Seaside Stripes:

The runways at fashion week have been filled with brightly coloured “seaside stripes” which have a real British Summertime vibe to them. Think beach umbrellas, brightly coloured deck chairs and ice cream weather. This Spring is going to be all about celebrating your childhood memories at the seaside, so beach colours and seaside stripes are going to be a wardrobe staple.

Shoes:

Following with the sporty comfy vibe that Spring is going to bring, expect to see a lot of trainers and sporty footwear to finish off an everyday look. The best thing about wearing the right kind of trainers is that you can wear them at any time of the day, whether you’re having a casual day out or going out at night, trainers have you covered! There are so many styles, brands and fits that the choice is endless, so get creative with your footwear this spring!

Shake Up Your Makeup:

This Spring we are turning our backs on sweet pastel colours and romantic pinks to make way for a bolder and brighter palette. This Spring our eyeshadow palettes should be filled with deep oranges, purples, blues and greens and our makeup bags should be filled with bold coloured lipsticks and lots of glitter. Fashion Week has set a tone for the future of makeup, and it seems that this Spring is going to be all about the 80s, so expect to see a lot of sparkle, bold colours and big hair!

Sabrina Carpenter | EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE + interview

February 2017: Revel Event Center (304 E. Stone Ave.) | Sabrina Carpenter performed EXCLUSIVELY in Greenville, SC for the FIRST time. You may recognize the starlet from Disney Channel’s hit TV show “Girl Meets World“. What I bet you didn’t know, is that she’s also widely recognized for her music. She performed her biggest hit “Thumbs“, as the crowd went WILD. Thumbs went up in the air while the irony + passion fumed the room. I asked her what her preshow routine was + she confidently replied: “Jamz + dancing on the tour bus!”

I’ll attach my concert video here for all you lovelies <3  Thank you ‘Revel’ for having us!

Faces of Royalty Annual Fashion Show

fullsizerender-8

“The Faces of Royalty is a benefit Designers and Fashion show to support our youth initiatives. It combines multi-levels of cultural creativity that represent our richness in the areas of the arts, spoken language, poetry, music and clothing designs.”

I’m such a sucker for fashion. From the music to the lights to the atmosphere. This particular show happened to have an amazing cause behind it. Brie Merritt, event planner & fashion blogger, partnered with an organization called Beyond Differences.  Beyond Differences is an organization in Greenville, SC that helps high schoolers transform their lives. Photo and video production was done by NELSONMERRITT PRODUCTIONS. If you’d like to check out their work, I’ll leave the link here!

Huge shout out to the host Breylan Jones; not just because he made me belch out an R. Kelly song haha. It was so exciting sitting across from fashion blogger, Janerio. Her outfit was gorgeous, and faux fur is always a plus 😉 Last but not least Tre Chapman of Sheen Magazine was in the building! I’ll post his outfit below. In case you didn’t know, he and Brie were the power couple of the evening <3 The poet was amazing, the clothes were amazing, the drinks were amazing, and the fact that it was all for a good cause puts the icing on the cake. PLUS THERE WAS AN AFTER PARTY.

I took a few photos of my favorite looks of the night. As always, I’ll save the best for last!

img_4664

This was one of my FAVORITE models of the night. Her sophisticated looks had everyone starstruck. The casual tie-dye top clashed with the heels in the best way possible.

Brie Merritt

Best for last: Brie’s look! It’s the same one Ericka Mena (star from “Love and Hip Hop New York”) owns! You can pick it up atinterwinecollection.com, as well as her gold ornament holiday bag. The jumpsuit was $215 and the bag was $50. She ROCKED it. The diamond choker completely pieced the entire thing together. If you wanna check out her fashion blog I’ll leave the link here. She’s absolutely incredible & such kind person. I had BLAST covering this event & I hope to do it again soon!

T. Lang’s POST: Preview Party

img_4572

As many of you guys know, one of my biggest passions is art. No matter what form. Not only was this beautiful event in the glory of the Whitespace Gallery. It’s a contemporary art gallery that features varied mediums in a converted 1893 carriage house. Pictures can’t do it justice.

img_4607

The performances gave me chills in the BEST way. Not just because it was 30 degrees, but because these artists have complete control of every emotion they have ever had. I’ve never seen so much passion. One glimpse, and you can tell there’s something amazing happening here. I can promise you that this won’t be the only time you hear the name “T. Lang.” Luckily for you, I have clips. (You can watch these incredible performances here, here, here, and right here.) If you want to see the real thing, the Post premieres in March 2017. I’ll be in attendance, and you’ll wanna to be there too. If you support the arts as much as I strive to, you can donate at the link here to keep this beautiful movement alive.

1. I saw where you used the Newport Street Gallery in London as a style inspiration. Can you tell me more about your view on life imitating art?

Newport Street Gallery has been an inspiration mostly with it’s Jeff Koons exhibition which really inspired me mostly from a colouristic point of view. In my vision actually art imitates life. We should all aspire to turn our lives into a work of art where the dark sides intertwine with the bright notes and which we always regard as an unfinished work, still in need to be perfected.

2. What or who got you into modeling?
I started doing photography at 15 years old and practicing photography with one of my best friends @lastminutecouture I found myself being behind and also in front of the camera. Then art school has offered me a context where I could model and then London. But modelling is not something I do on a regular basis even though I do have an agency and I collab with quite a big number of brands.

3. Who’s your style inspiration?
My style inspiration would be Lucky Blue Smith who I really look up to . I am also very fond of the Old Hollywood style, I will always believe that in a previous life I lived in those times, having dinner at Cipriani’s in West Hollywood and driving a Chevy Malibu.
FullSizeRender (7)
4. Five of your favorite summer trends: go!
1. suede everything
2. white socks
3. highlights
4. turtlenecks on a rainy day
5. and obviously Stan Smiths

5. What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day can vary. I can sit all day and watch Orange is the New Black on television or I can have 300 things to do at once, from meetings with an agent, going to a casting, to meetings with a music producer I work close with or doing a photo shoot for a blogger .
I have branched out into several areas from fashion blogging, endorsing and photography to music and music production is a very important thing for me so obviously it gets a bit crowded sometimes.
I believe successful people wake up early and no matter when I go to bed I always wake up no later than 7 am usually 6:30.
A daily workout is always there and I never forget to play the guitar for at least 15 minutes.

FullSizeRender (2)

6. As an independent musician how would you describe your music to other people?
In one word : personal. Everything and anything you hear or will hear from me is created entirely by me from lyrics to melody.
I try to fight for my creative director role and it empowers me a lot to take an executive decision on my craft.

7. What is it you want to say with your photographs & what advice do you have for someone that wants to go into photography?
With my photography I clearly search for my own edge. Unique or not it has to be your input and as long as you feel you’ve given your all in that creative process you’re already on the right track.
When it comes to photography after moving to London I realized how important team work is and how much I needed it.
One advice would be do it with passion, always pay attention to what others are telling you and try to always upstage yourself and not others. Basically be the best version of yourself.

Style Appreciation Post: Cole Sprouse

Hey guys! This is my first Style Appreciation Post, but I plan on doing many more in the future 🙂 So, recently I’ve been seeing Cole Sprouse all over Twitter for his latest distinct style. Can we just take a minute to soak in the fact that even though Cole’s not doing any huge projects right now, he’s still taking the internet by storm.

If you don’t recognize the name, you’ll recognize the face. Cole & his brother played Zack and Cody on the hit Disney Channel show “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”. Ladies and gentleman: welcome to my official Cole Sprouse appreciation post. Cole’s been combining vintage and modern trends to create the most chilling looks.

This is hands down one of Cole’s most popular photos. The way the overalls put the entire piece together inspires the shoes. Oxfords and loafers go great when you’re trying to create something vintage. If you look closely you can see the accessories: a ring on his thumb and a watch.

This is one of my favorites just because it looks like something right out of an old movie. I feel like Aubrey Hepburn could step right into the scene. Cole’s classic look includes a skinny suit but no accessories. If he did have accessories they’d probably take away from the “classic” vibe that’s going on. There’s another picture from this particular shoot where he leaves the button up unbuttoned, giving it a California feel.

This next look was interesting because he pieced together a raw denim shirt with blue jeans. Cole is the first guy I’ve ever seen to pull this look off. Usually denim on denim comes off tacky but the way he matched it with the jacket comes together almost effortlessly.

This. I saw this and LITERALLY sent it to like five of my friends. Cole's glasses are very peculiar. The aged look seems to be his best. I kinda got a young Leonardo Decaprio vibe.

Well that’s all for my first Style Appreciation Post, but I’ll leave some pictures below. Thanks for reading guys! If you know of anyone you’d like to nominate for next time, please feel free to comment!

Happy Head Tees

You know how everyone has that one shirt that they live in? I’m talking eat, sleep, wear & repeat. Happy Head Tees was kind enough to send me one of those shirts! Before I reveal it, lemme tell you a little bit about this adorable shop. Happy Head Tees is located in Atlanta, Georgia. They do custom orders but if you have nothing in mind, they have a gigantic collection of the neatest graphic t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and tank tops! One of my favorite things about this shop, is that their shirts are printed on American Apparel 50/50 poly-cotton t-shirts. Not only that, they’re SO reasonably priced it’s insane. For those of you that don’t know, I’m a vegetarian & occasional vegan. This shop truly has a little bit of everything. They have a section based solely on animal rights. The shirt HHT generously sent me was their “Friends, Not Food.” tee. (You can check it out here.”) If you need a last minute graduation gift but don’t wanna break the bank, Happy Head Tees is your place!

Sheen Magazine’s Legendary Weekend

During April 29th through May 1st, Sheen Magazine had their Legendary Weekend Event “Celebrating A Decade of Beauty Cultivation.” First off, I’d like to thank Sheen for letting me cover the event while being so accommodating to my aunt Ivy & I. I’d also like to thank Uber for getting us through Atlanta safely! If you don’t know what Uber is: download their safe app. No matter where you are, you can get a ride completely cashless. In fact, Joe Jones is an Uber driver in LA! Sign up with my invite code {mikaylah263ue} to get your first ride completely free!

Kim Chapman and Sammy Haynes

Ivy & I arrived to the Atlanta Marriott Marquis during the Women’s Panel. The popular hotel was packed! We pulled up to valet. Since there were so many people, the valet wasn’t able to accommodate us so we had to find a parking garage near the hotel. I’d done some research the night before and as it turns out, Mockingjay Part 1 & 2 were filmed right in the middle of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. Anyway, when we walked in the panel was being hosted by Kim Chapman. Mrs. Chapman is the sole publisher of Sheen Magazine. There were some truly inspiring panelists, my favorite being Mushiya. If you haven’t heard of her, I STRONGLY encourage you to look her up. I recorded her entire speech word for word. To paraphrase, she has a TV show called Cutting it in the Atl. She brought out how she started her salon “The Damn Salon” with a comb, a chair, and a goal. her goal was to make natural hair beautiful. As she cleverly put it, don’t waste your time having a dream when you should be having a GOAL. The fashion icon definitely made her mark. I promise you this, she left everyone in that room inspired.

After the women’s panel came the men’s panel. Between the two, this one had the most celebrities. I had the priveledge of sitting front row. “What a Man Wants” was hosted by Sammi Haynes the editor & chief of Sheen. The panelists consisted of Christian Keyes (Saints & Sinners, Beauty and the Beast, Madea Goes to Jail, Diary of a Mad Black Women, etc), T.W. Dawson (motivational speaker, author), Pastor Adrian Davis, Tre Chapman (Chapman Founder Chair as well as Mrs. Chapman’s son) and Andre Braxton (Braxton Family Values, author). When I saw the pictures of the panelists I did an instant double take. I KNEW TRE CHAPMAN. I work at Banana Republic where he and his gorgeous girlfriend are two of our favorite customers. I had planned to go up to him after his panel, but I was surprised to see him appear right beside me! “You work at Banana Republic right?” I couldn’t believe he’d never brought up that his mother owned a magazine, but I realized that I never brought up I was a blogger. I’m always nervous when covering events, but the fact that I knew a familiar face settled my stomach. After the men’s panel I got to meet the rest of the panelists. All the women seemed to make a beeline for Christian Hayes. The highlight of that panel was after my selfie with Mr. Braxton. He asked for one of my business cards. While my aunt & I mingled, I received a few business cards myself. The creator of Lyne Cosmetics from lynecosmetics.com was so intriguing. She makes her own cosmetics and hires her own models. Her products have made celebrity appearances on Nickelodeon, participated in Ryan Seacreast giveaways, and were featured in the Water Mercedes Benz Fashion Show. A portion of each purchase is donated to end violence against women. Then, the CEO of Wrighteous Entertainment offered me his card. He manages not only his daughter, but many young actors/singers in the Atlanta area. Last but not least, Nelson-Merritt Productions. They’re an incredible photography & videography business that I encourage everyone to look in to. Especially since it’s wedding/graduation season.

The Men’s Panel

We called an Uber & headed to Lenox Square since we had a few hours before the Black Tie Gala started. The shopping mall was packed, but we managed to find everything we needed. I picked up a few graduation gifts & Ivy threw herself into the clothes. As I walked into Urban Outfitters, I checked my phone to find multiple text messages from a friend in Atlanta. I had known Beyonce was in the area because she had a concert at the Philips Arena the next day. Thanks to her, I discovered that it was rumored Beyonce was in Lenox at that exact moment. So I did what any fan would do. I got on Twitter… & as it turned out, the term “Lenox” was trending #1 worldwide because of the superstar. I still don’t know for sure if Beyonce was there while I was, but the fact that we shared the same city that day made all the difference.

As we Ubered back to the hotel, our driver passed the hotel drop off spot twice. I was so frustrated because the Gala was supposed to be the main event. Thankfully when we got to the red carpet, none of the honorees had arrived yet. I quickly found a spot in the mob of press. I was probably the only one who wasn’t from the Atlanta area. As the honorees started arriving, the commotion started getting bigger. Security was perched at each door while pressed workers rushed to get everyone in their seats. The honorees & special guests were Kelly Price (six time Grammy nominated singer), Margaret Avery (American actress & singer), Judge Glenda Hatchett (featured on The Tyra Banks Show, The View, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CNN, etc), Renee Lawless (Tyler Perry’s The Have and the Have Nots), Angela Robinson (Tyler Perry’s The Have and Have Nots, Law and Order: SVU), Cocoa Brown (Ted 2, The People v. O.J. Simpson, Breaking Bad, The Single Moms Club, ER, Austin & Ally, The Arsenio Hall Show, etc), Towanda Braxton (Braxton Family Values, The Wendy Williams Show, BET Awards 2001, etc), Joseline Hernandez (Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, BET Awards 2015), Jasmine Burke (Saints & Sinners, Ride Along, TVD, Meet the Browns, etc), and many more. The neat thing is, a couple days before the event, Margaret Avery commented on my Instagram picture. We had a small conversation, so when she arrived at the end of the red carpet I was so pumped to tell her who I was. Unfortunately, her manager whisked her away.

Most if not all of the special guests were located in Atlanta, although Sheen Magazine is located in Fountain Inn. The entire Gala was amazing. Under the dim of the lights and the shimmer of the dresses, I felt like I was under the stars. I’ll leave Sheen’s website here. They have events like fashion shows so often & I definitely encourage you guys to check them out. Until next time Atlanta!
